Joan Conn has now returned back to the U.S. to coordinate efforts here, but Dr. Conn’s brother, Raymond, and the rest of their staff are still in Haiti.  Berry College Circle K has mounted a campaign to support the Restavec Foundation in their earthquake relief efforts, and will continue that support as rebuilding begins down the road.  In December, the Foundation began a new partnership with Bill Clinton’s Global Initiative, but that also is long-term.

For now, the immediate need for the Haiti people is for financial support to keep relief flowing.  We encourage anyone interested to contact Dr. Conn to donate to the club’s efforts.

At today’s Kiwanis meeting, members heard from Dr. Jeff Thompson, Director of Respiratory and Sleep Diagnostics at Floyd Medical Center about childhood sleep disorders. Floyd is the only provider of Pediatric Medicine in the surrounding area and uses their state-of-the-art sleep center to diagnose and treat these unique issues.

Common issues include sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, restless leg syndrome, and somnambulism. Sleep disorders in children can lead to a host of physical problems such as growth retardation, cardiovascular development interference, incorrect diagnosis of ADD or other psychotic issues, seizures, and general fatigue.

While there are medical treatments for severe sleep disorders, Dr. Thompson says that typically good sleep hygiene cures most problems. “Kids need to be in a dark, quiet room where they feel safe and secure for 8-10 hours every night,” says Thompson. If that doesn’t work, removal of tonsils, cpap and bipap machines, and pharmocotherapy are also available remedies.

This year, we are offering Rome, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Mutzu, and Fuji apples in several different size options.  Your customers can order a 1/2 peck, a full peck, or a sampler that will contain at least one of each kind. Prices are as follows:

All apples are freshly picked from family-owned and operated Mercier Orchards in the lovely Ellijay, Ga and will be available for pickup by Kiwanis members from The Forum on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 29-30 to be delivered to your customers.

ACL tears, concussions, female athletic triad, and drug abuse all affect student atheletes in the Rome community. Today, Rome Kiwanis members heard about the growing number of youth injuries due to a significant rise in sports participation.

Harbin Clinic Orthopaedic doctor and MLB committee member, Dr. Brad Bushnell, shared today about the importance of injury prevention in youth athletes. He is working to implement a community-wide pitch limit for multi-league ball players to prevent arm injuries and called on Kiwanis members to encourage the young people in our lives to be smart about their sports participation.
